Yo tengo / ¿Quién tiene? (Descripción Física)

I like using Yo Tengo / ¿Quién tiene? activities as a quick way to practice pronunciation, and an informal, low-stakes way to formatively assess individual pronunciation.

Recently I have been using this set with my 6th graders, who are practicing the physical description vocabulary we have been working with. This focuses on noun-adjective agreement (with the colors.)

Hope it can be useful!

For those who have not used this type of activity before:

  1. Explain to students that they are going to try to work together to read through the entire sequence of cards as quickly as possible. After the student reads "Yo tengo X. ¿Quién tiene Y?" the student who has card Y reads "Yo tengo Y. ¿Quién tiene...?" and so on, until all cards have been read. Unless the set is sequential (like this set for practicing numbers in Spanish) it doesn't matter who starts.
  2. Give students a moment to check that they know how to read and pronounce the words on their paper.
  3. Have students stand up until they have read their paper. They sit down after their turn. This makes it easier to tell who has not gone yet, and who might need a gentle reminder.
  4. Highlight the skills they will need to accomplish this task successfully. Better yet, give it a try once and have students give suggestions for improving next time. Usually tips would be: listening for their word, pronouncing their lines clearly and loudly, and the importance of repeating the word in Spanish rather than in English if someone needs a little nudge. (This is to prevent students from shouting out translations in frustration with a classmate who has forgotten their word, or who isn't paying attention.)
  5. Time how long the class takes to complete the sequence. (I use this online stopwatch.) Emphasize good teamwork and how it affects the ability to complete this task as a group. Let them know that they will be able to reduce their time with practice. (Often they will want to try again right away.) Keep track of their time and save it for the next practice opportunity.
